What’s in Katie’s Case?

katie brinesKatie Brines has held every front-of-the-house position at the American Spoon Café. She came to work for us three years ago as a favor to her sister, who managed the Café that summer, and she was so cheerful and charming that we insisted on keeping her. Katie took over managerial responsibilities in the middle of last summer, and this year she returns as Café Manager. Regulars will recognize her friendly smile and genuine air of graceful hospitality.

Born and raised in Petoskey, Katie is a small-town girl with a wanderer’s spirit. After years of travel and temporary addresses, she returned to Northern Michigan as her home-base. “I really missed the lake,” she explains,” and it’s so great here in the summertime.” The Café is the perfect for Katie’s peripatetic  lifestyle, and working there has strengthened her lifelong love of cooking and belief in the importance of good food.

At home, Katie and her boyfriend cook together, improvising in the kitchen and playing around with how flavors work together. Katie eats healthy and local, and in summer, her meals are centered around produce poached from the gardens of family and friends. She has a bit of a sweet tooth, but she prefers fruit and jams that are slightly more tart, and she loves to pair them with rich, creamy foods.

Here are the 12 staples you’ll almost always find in her pantry.

What’s in Leslie’s Case?

what's in Leslie's case?Leslie Dupin is a familiar face at our Downtown Petoskey store. When she started working for American Spoon during the 2010 holiday season, we were instantly charmed by her enthusiasm and her unwavering good cheer, so she transitioned from her temporary position answering phones to a year-round position in our store. She’d never worked retail before, but she’s a people person through-and-through and the job was such a perfect fit that she now co-manages both the Petoskey and Charlevoix stores. “It just sort of grew on me,” she explains with her signature smile.

Leslie grew up in metro Detroit and spent her summers at a family cottage in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. As an adult living on the outskirts of New York City, she and her husband returned to Michigan every summer, and eventually their longing for a simpler life in a small town led them to settle in Petoskey where they now make their home. Leslie loves to entertain and good food is the focal point of every gathering, from family dinners at home to casual parties with friends. She’s an avid baker with a bit of a sweet tooth who favors simple, easy-to-prepare recipes.

Here are the 12 staples you’ll almost always find in her pantry.

What’s in Jerry’s Case?

jerry gillJerry Gill is our in-house superhero. He came to work for American Spoon six years ago and is responsible for maintaining all of our buildings and equipment. Jerry keeps our entire operation running smoothly, and when something doesn’t work, he fixes it. Jerry can fix anything, and he does it all with a spirit of goodwill.

A Petoskey native, Jerry now makes his home along the Sturgeon River with his high school sweetheart, Rokki. He does bear a resemblance to Santa Claus, and last Christmas he delighted Rokki’s nephews by donning a red suit and delivering toys. Throughout the winter, he and his son bundle up and ride snowmobiles to work. It adds about fifteen minutes to the trip, but Jerry loves being out on the trail. No one else is around and he’s always amazed by the variety of wildlife he sees as he rides through the snowy woods.

At home, Jerry grills year-round–even in winter, and he likes to create something new every time he barbecues. Here are the 12 staples you’ll almost always find in his pantry.

What’s in Shawn’s Case?

shawn corcoranIf you’ve ever placed on order with us by phone, you’ve probably talked to Shawn Corcoran. He’s one of the people who make up our year-round customer service staff. Shawn’s been with American Spoon for six years, and he’s intimately familiar with everything we make. He spends his days on the phone answering questions and expertly guiding customers toward new loves and old favorites. He thoroughly enjoys chatting with people about something they love that makes them happy.

Shawn is the primary cook in his household. He likes pronounced, bold savory flavors and sweet, single-note fruit flavors. He’s a French-Canadian native of Québec who married a Michigan girl and now makes his home here in Petoskey. Although the climate and culture are different, many of his American Spoon favorites remind him of home, because—as Shawn says—”food is really about memory.”

Here are the 12 staples you’ll almost always find in his pantry.

What’s in Mom’s Case?

moms

You may recognize Justin’s wife Kate and son Noah from the Mother’s Day catalogs we published decades ago (ABOVE, LEFT). Last year, Noah and his wife Jessica welcomed Baby Milo to their family, and we’re delighted to welcome a new generation of Marshall-Rashids to the American Spoon family. Jessica’s been a fixture at our Café for five years, greeting guests with a smile and scooping gelato all summer long. She’s always loved jam, and she has a serious sweet tooth. With Mother’s Day approaching, we asked Jessica to share her favorites, so here are the 12 American Spoon staples you’ll almost always find in her pantry.
